Atul Kochhar (born 31 August 1969) is an Indian born, British based chef, restaurateur, and television personality. He was the second Indian chef to receive a Michelin star, awarded to Benares restaurant in London in 2007. Kochhar appears on television shows including Masterchef Goes Large and Great British Menu. Atul Kochhar Career
Atul began his cooking career at the Oberoi groups of hotels in India in the year 1989 and he was working with them till 1994. He worked at the Five star deluxe Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi, where he worked as a Sous Chef in one of the restaurants. Atul later joined Marks and Spencer as a consultant chef and advised them on the Indian Food Range. He opened a restaurant and bar called as Benares Restaurant and bar in May 2003 and this restaurant is amongst the world’s best Indian restaurants. It is very famous for its Indian Cuisine and mixed spices that he uses in the dishes. Kochhar then opened a restaurant in Ireland in the year 2008, which is called as Ananda.
He also opened the Vatika hotel in the same year. There they serve extremely nice cuisines, which are made of fresh herbs and freshly prepared ingredients. Vatika was closed in the year 2011. Both Atul and Benares have been awarded a number of accolades including Atul receiving an Honorary Doctorate Degree from University of Southampton to recognise the work that he has contributed to the culinary industry. He has also received the Outstanding Contribution to the Curry Industry at the 2005 British Curry Awards and on 20 March 2010 he received the TMG Cordon Bleu Award. In addition, Atul was invited to meet the Queen during a State visit with the President of India, along with being invited to cook for Prince Charles at St James’ Palace in April 2010.
Kochhar is involved in the children’s charities Barnardo’s, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Save the Children, and an Ambassador for Find Your Feet, a small charity that supports poverty stricken rural areas by developing successful poverty-relief programmes that encourage self-sufficiency and independence. In June 2018, JW Marriott Marquis Dubai terminated Kochhar contract after Muslims protested. And called for boycott of the hotel for not terminating him for his comments directed at Priyanka Chopra. Kochhar also tweeted “Hindus have been terrorised by Islam for over 2000 years”. Later on he further shamelessly tweeted “I fully recognise my inaccuracies that Islam was founded around 1,400 years ago. And I sincerely apologise. I am not Islamophobic, I deeply regret my comments that have offended many,”. This was however not taken as an apology but a correction to his earlier tweet which said Islam was existing 2000 years ago.
