Born to Senerath and Sunila Jayawardene on May 27, 1977 in Colombo, Mahela has played for several teams at domestic levels alongside his international career. Dhishal, his younger brother, died at the age of 16 due to brain tumor, affecting his career for some time. He married a travel consultant, Christina Mallika Sirisena and the couple gave birth to one daughter. Jayawerdene started playing international cricket in 1997 during a test match against India, during which, he contributed to the historic total of 952 runs and scored the first century in the 4th match of his career. In 2006, he took the captaincy of the team for both ODI and Test formats and scored a record-breaking 374 when playing against South Africa. Although he renounced from this post in 2009, yet he again took the charge during the 2011-12 season with his 21st ton in test format. He retired from the test format in August 2014 with 11,814 runs at a brilliant average of 49.84 and continued in the ODI format with more than 12,500 runs.
